In a tribute to our beloved Bongo, who sadly passed away just over two weeks ago, we wanted to give a special tribute to the love of dogs in Mahon’s Hotel.
Joe’s lifelong love of dogs was a love that started when he was just four years old with a rough collie called Whisky. Whisky would walk Joe and his siblings to school in the morning, wait on them, and proudly walk them home again, a memory that has stayed forever with him. And one which means that Mahon’s Hotel will forever be dog friendly.
The Mahon family home – and eventually the hotel – was never without a dog. After Whisky came two collies, from Tyrone and Leitrim, followed by Midge the poodle cross, then Taniel the Pomeranian. Each dog brought its own personality, quirks and stories, and for Joe they were never “just pets”. To Mahon’s Hotel being dog friendly means dogs are treated like guests, just like our two-legged friends.
Shep, Bongo and the Dogs Who Stole the Show
Many regular guests will remember stories about Shep, one of Joe’s most memorable dogs. Shep lived to the grand age of 16 and even won a local competition called Rex Factor thanks to his charm and character. Joe and Shep went out together singing for different charities – including a memorable rendition of “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window” – turning their bond into something that brought joy to the wider community as well. This is why you and your dog come to Mahon’s Hotel, you are treated as family.
Then came Bongo, who Joe had for ten years after adopting him from Bright Eyes. Bongo had been abused before he arrived but, with patience and care, grew into a great dog with a unique personality. He wasn’t quite the sociable dog Shep was, but on the many walks around Castle Irvine and visits into the hotel became a beloved character. Every dog gets treated the same way when they stay at Mahon’s Hotel.
Today, Rufus is the newest arrival – Joe’s 11 week old pup who is already turning out to be a great dog too. Not forgetting Barney, the lovable St Bernard who melted even Paul Mahon’s heart.
Why Mahon’s Became Dog Friendly
Becoming dog friendly wasn’t a decision made in an office, Mahon’s Hotel was just meant to be dog friendly. A special mention to Bongo who was more than a dog, he was a family member, and a great friend. These dogs and those visiting make being dog friendly simple.
How That Love Shows Up in Your Stay
Because Mahon’s dog-friendly policy comes from genuine experience, it’s thought through in a way dog owners appreciate. There are specific rooms set aside for guests with dogs, plenty of space for beds and bowls, and easy access to local walks so you can get out exploring together. Staff welcome overnight doggy guests and those popping in for a bite to eat with treats and tummy rubs (if they allow it).
People and dogs are invited to come out for walks with Joe. Shep and then Bongo were always there and most of the time the main reason guests were delighted to head out (sorry, Joe) . This tradition will remain the same, we hope, for years to come.
We understand that every dog is different – some are rescues like Bongo, some are outgoing singers like Shep. All dogs are welcome.
