MAHONS HOTEL THROUGH THE YEARS
Current owners are always looking to expand and have purchased the derelict building next door, pending further developments
Mahon’s Hotel had always been a two star until 2005 when a major investment of 1.8million pounds was made. This happened after a bomb attack occurred in the hotel in 2000, where half of the hotel was completely destroyed. The hotel has since held a three-star rating.
In 1994 Mrs Mahon died. The hotel is now owned, managed and run by Joe, Paul and Aisling (all Vincent’s children). Throughout the years and the many changes those years have brought the hotel has always maintained its reputation for offering down-to-earth, homely, and comfortable accommodation. Always at the heart of the hotel is the local community who dine and drink with us.
In 1986 the family bought the local cinema beside the hotel and with considerable investment turned it into the Delany suite, a 300-seater function room for weddings, functions etc. The main hotel has been frequently renovated over the years to keep standards up.
When Vincent died his son Joe was studying in Manchester, preparing himself in Hotel Management. He returned home in 1982 to work alongside his mother. In 1985, as a lot of the rooms were not ensuite, the family carried out further renovations making all the rooms ensuite. This meant that the hotel could offer nineteen ensuite rooms and it had the benefit of creating additional space in the restaurant.
Joseph Mahon married Minnie Montague and they went on to have ten children. He ran the hotel until 1951 when he died. The business was then taken over by his son Vincent Mahon until his untimely death in 1979. During Vincent’s time running the business it saw a significant period of growth. The first major development was the removal of horse stables to make a restaurant with rooms above it in 1958. This added extra rooms to the original accommodation, making it a hotel of fourteen rooms. In 1964 further additional rooms were added by Vincent Mahon to bring the total to twenty-five rooms.
Mahon’s Hotel began its journey back in 1883, when it was opened by Joseph Mahon who had previously owned the Erne Hotel in Ballyshannon. It started as a coaching inn when the stabling of horses, food provision and accommodation were secondary to the main business of farming. It has grown in size and focus over the years to become a community hub for locals and visitors to Fermanagh.
